18 June 2010
June 18th 2010 marked the 180th anniversary of the building of the Central Market and the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Market as a speciality shopping and restaurant centre following a substantial rebuild after the former wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market moved out to Nine Elms.
The celebrations extended from the Friday right over the weekend and included a giant birthday cake with plenty for everyone to share, a giant birthday card for everyone to sign and which soon collected good wishes from as far afield as Kosovo, China and Japan, community stalls, games and races, entertainment for children and grown-ups, and a whole host of other fun and games.
Children from the two local primary schools entered into the spirit of things by dressing up and with children from St Joseph's singing in the North Hall and the Apple Market traders joined in the celebrations by making Limited Edition items to sell on their stalls.
The whole occasion was organised and co-ordinated by the team from Covent Garden London who have been the major freeholder in the central Covent Garden area since 2006.
